Interview Tip — Do Your Company Research (and get hired)
Published · ENB Enterprise Recruitment Agency
Walking into an interview without knowing the company is like showing up to a city without a map — you might get somewhere, but you’ll look lost. Candidates who research the organisation arrive focused, confident and ready to answer the tougher “why” questions. Use the short checklist and sample answers below to get interview-ready.
Quick research checklist (do these before the interview)
- Company overview: what the organisation does, who its customers are and which markets it serves.
- Mission & values: core values, stated goals and any public commitments (CSR, quality, innovation).
- Products / services: the main offerings — recent launches or projects are golden talking points.
- Culture & structure: company size, team setup and working style (formal vs. flexible).
- News & reputation: check recent press, LinkedIn posts or local news for updates and context.
Why this matters — short version
- Shows genuine interest: employers hire people who care about the business, not just a paycheck.
- Lets you tailor answers: you can align your skills and examples to the company’s priorities.
- Makes you memorable: a single specific insight (from your research) often beats a generic answer.
Two short sample answers (use your own examples)
Why should we hire you?
“You should hire me because I bring proven experience delivering results in [area]. For example, at my last role I reduced processing time by 30% through a simple workflow change — that’s the same efficiency focus I see in your recent project on [project name]. I can deliver similar improvements here, starting in month one.”
Why do you want to join this company?
“I’ve followed your work on [product/project] and I respect how the team prioritises [value — e.g., customer outcomes]. Your focus on [core value] fits my strengths and career goals — I want to contribute to that growth and help scale the wins you’re already getting.”
Pre-interview action plan (10–20 minutes)
- Scan the company website & “About” page for mission and offerings.
- Open LinkedIn: read the company page and two recent posts; check the hiring manager’s profile for shared background.
- Search one news result for the company (Google News or local press).
- Prepare one specific question to ask the interviewer that shows you did the work (e.g., “How does the team measure success on X?”).
Final tip
Knowledge alone won’t win the job — pair your research with a clear story about your impact. Use metrics (numbers, percentages, timelines) and explain how you’ll apply the same approach to this role.
